Ibrahim Lamorde, the former chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has passed away at the age of 61. Lamorde died on Sunday morning in Egypt, where he had traveled to receive medical treatment.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Lamorde’s career in law enforcement began in 1986 when he joined the Nigeria Police Force.
He served with distinction, ultimately rising to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police before his retirement in 2021.
Throughout his career, Lamorde was known for his dedication to combating corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.
Lamorde’s tenure at the EFCC began under President Goodluck Jonathan.
He was appointed as the acting chairman of the commission on November 23, 2011, following the departure of Mrs. Farida Waziri.
His appointment was confirmed on February 15, 2012, making him the substantive chairman of the EFCC.
During his time in office, Lamorde spearheaded several high-profile investigations and prosecutions, earning both praise and criticism for his aggressive approach to tackling corruption.
However, his tenure was not without controversy.
Critics accused the EFCC under his leadership of selective justice and targeting political opponents.
Despite these challenges, Lamorde remained a prominent figure in Nigeria’s fight against corruption until the end of his tenure.
On November 9, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari replaced Lamorde with Ibrahim Magu as the acting EFCC chairman.

He is survived by his family, friends, and colleagues who mourn his loss and remember his dedication to public service. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
