BREAKING : Supreme Court Validates Abba Yusuf’s Election as Kano Governor

In a decisive ruling, the Supreme Court has upheld the election of Abba Yusuf as the governor of Kano State.

The five-member panel unanimously declared that both the tribunal and the court of appeal were in error when they nullified Yusuf’s victory.

The controversy surrounding Yusuf’s election unfolded after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner in March 2023, securing 1,019,602 votes against Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 890,705 votes.

However, the Kano governorship election petition tribunal overturned Yusuf’s victory in September, deducting 165,663 votes due to unstamped, unsigned, and undated ballot papers. Subsequently, Gawuna was declared the winner.

The NNPP and its candidate challenged the verdict at the court of appeal, which, on November 17, 2023, not only upheld the tribunal’s decision but also claimed that Yusuf was not an NNPP member during the election.

Controversy ensued when a certified true copy (CTC) of the appeal court judgment revealed conflicting rulings on the same matter, attributed to a “clerical error” by the court. Despite the earlier discrepancies, the Supreme Court has now affirmed Abba Yusuf’s rightful position as the elected governor of Kano State.
