A marriage reportedly ended just days after a wedding ceremony following an alleged altercation between a bride and her mother-in-law over food served at the reception, sparking widespread debate on social media.
The incident, which first surfaced in a broadcast by an Edo State-based radio and television station on July 20, gained traction online on Friday after a video discussing the incident went viral.
According to the report, the disagreement began after food served at the wedding reception ran out before some members of the groom’s family arrived.
The broadcaster claimed that a couple from the groom’s family, who arrived late after travelling a long distance, found that only a portion reserved for the bride’s parents remained.
The groom’s mother was said to have appealed to the bride to release part of the reserved meal for the visitors, but the bride allegedly declined.
The report further alleged that when the mother-in-law attempted to serve the food herself, the bride retrieved it and poured it back into the cooler.
This reportedly led to a physical confrontation, with the mother-in-law allegedly slapping the bride first before the bride retaliated by slapping her.
Although the wedding reception continued without further public drama, the broadcast claimed that the groom decided to end the marriage two days later.
However, legal experts featured in the same broadcast questioned claims that the marriage had been dissolved within such a short period.
A lawyer, Franka Osie, explained that a statutory marriage cannot ordinarily be dissolved just two days after a wedding under Nigerian law.
Another legal practitioner noted that the Matrimonial Causes Act generally bars parties in a statutory marriage from filing for divorce until they have been married for at least two years, except in exceptional circumstances involving severe hardship or cruelty. The lawyer added that an annulment could be an option where the legal requirements are met.
The alleged incident has since generated intense reactions across social media platforms, with users divided over who should bear responsibility for the confrontation.
While some criticised both the bride and her mother-in-law for resorting to violence, others faulted the groom for allegedly failing to intervene or establish boundaries between his wife and his family.
Some commentators defended the bride, arguing that she merely reacted after being slapped, while others insisted that retaliating with violence was unjustifiable.
Others blamed the bride’s conduct, describing the alleged confrontation over food as inappropriate and reflective of poor conflict management.
Several users also suggested that the reported altercation may have exposed deeper issues in the relationship, arguing that such a dispute alone was unlikely to have caused the collapse of a marriage within days.
The incident has continued to fuel conversations on family boundaries, wedding etiquette, anger management and the role of in-laws in newly contracted marriages. Notably, the claims surrounding the incident remain based on the broadcast and have not been independently verified.
