A member of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, has defended President Bola Tinubu over the country’s persistent security challenges, arguing that the failure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired army general, to completely end insecurity should be considered when assessing the current administration.
Yari said the Tinubu administration should not be held solely responsible for the security crisis, noting that Buhari, despite his military background and efforts to combat insecurity during his eight-year tenure, could not completely eliminate the problem.
The former Zamfara State governor made the remarks on Monday during a visit to Kebbi State, where he met with Governor Nasir Idris, traditional rulers and other APC leaders in Birnin Kebbi.
He acknowledged the security challenges confronting the country but maintained that Tinubu was making efforts to address them.
“If a retired general did his best but could not completely tackle insecurity, what do you expect of President Tinubu, who is not a general?
“Nevertheless, the President has done his utmost best to address the security challenges confronting the country,” Yari said.
His comments come amid persistent concerns over insecurity in several parts of Nigeria, including banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes that have continued to threaten lives, livelihoods and economic activities.
While defending Tinubu, Yari did not provide specific details of the security measures he believed had yielded results under the current administration.
Beyond the security situation, the APC chieftain expressed confidence in the party’s chances in Kebbi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He commended Idris and other party leaders for mobilising support for the APC, expressing optimism that their efforts would translate into electoral victories for Tinubu and other party candidates.
Yari also said the presidential campaign council was prepared to work with individuals and groups willing to support Tinubu’s re-election bid, irrespective of their positions.
He said the level of support he observed during his visit had strengthened his confidence in the APC’s prospects in the state.
The senator urged party leaders and supporters to sustain their mobilisation efforts as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, has faced mounting public concerns over insecurity, with Nigerians continuing to demand stronger measures to protect lives and property.
Buhari, who governed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, also faced widespread criticism over insecurity during his administration, despite his background as a retired major general and former military head of state.
Yari’s remarks suggest that the APC campaign council intends to defend Tinubu’s security record partly by drawing comparisons with the challenges encountered by his predecessor.
