Activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has accused the administrations of former President Muhammadu Buhari and incumbent President Bola Tinubu of enabling what he described as the entrenchment of terrorist groups in Nigeria.
Farotimi made the allegation on Wednesday during an interview on State Affairs, a podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, while reacting to the worsening security situation across the country.
He claimed that the handling of insecurity by successive governments under the ruling All Progressives Congress had emboldened violent actors and weakened state authority.
According to him, “It is Buhari, the APC, and Tinubu’s government that enabled Fulani terrorists to overtake Nigeria.”
He further alleged that the Nigerian state had failed to act decisively against violent groups, citing what he described as incidents of extreme impunity, including the killing of a senior police officer.
“The Nigerian state is so useless that at one time, an Assistant Commissioner of Police was murdered by a Fulani terrorist,” he said.
Farotimi also recounted a claim in which he alleged that a suspect involved in the killing of the officer wore the victim’s uniform and later participated in a government-led peace negotiation.
He argued that such developments reflected a dangerous level of tolerance for criminality, which, according to him, has worsened insecurity nationwide.
“It is the impunity that has extended to the Fulanis that has made it impossible to deal decisively with the madness that has overtaken us,” he added.
The allegations come amid renewed public debate over Nigeria’s security architecture, as the federal government continues to face criticism over rising attacks, kidnappings, and banditry in several regions of the country.
