The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed Nigeria’s Super Eagles a 3-0 victory over Libya and awarded them full points in their 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, citing maltreatment during the team’s trip to Libya.
The decision, delivered by the CAF Disciplinary Board on Saturday, imposes a $50,000 fine on the Libyan Football Federation and comes after an investigation into complaints lodged by Nigeria over logistical hardships.
The Super Eagles faced significant obstacles en route to the October 15 match in Benghazi, including a diverted flight, over 18 hours of delays, and other logistical issues.
The Nigerian team had secured a 1-0 victory over Libya in the first leg held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, but reported that their travel for the second leg was marred by “unnecessary hardship,” sparking calls for accountability.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board, led by Chairman Ousmane Kane, cited Libya’s violation of Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
“The match No. 87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025… [is] declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0),” the statement read, instructing Libya to remit the $50,000 fine within 60 days.
With this outcome, the Super Eagles now hold 10 points from four matches, putting them in a strong position to qualify for AFCON 2025 with two games to spare.
Nigeria sits atop Group A, leading by four points over Benin Republic, while Rwanda follows with five points, and Libya is effectively out of the running with just one point.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe addressed the issue briefly at the 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, reiterating CAF’s commitment to fair play.
“The process has been properly investigated, and appropriate action will be taken,” Motsepe said, emphasizing that such incidents would no longer be tolerated across Africa.
