Chrisland University, Abeokuta, has made a notable addition to its academic team with the appointment of retired Commodore Adekunle Olawunmi as an Associate Professor.

The promotion, which takes effect from October 1, 2023, was ratified by the University’s Governing Council, chaired by Distinguished Professor Ayodeji Olukoju.

Commodore Olawunmi, a former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja and ex-Commandant of the Defence Intelligence College, Nigeria, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

He is currently serving as the Head of the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy at Chrisland University.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chinedum Babalola also announced the elevation of three other top academics.

Prof. Joan Mbagwu (Criminology and Security Studies) and Prof. Augustine Onyeaghala (Medical Laboratory Studies) were promoted to full professors, while Adegboyega Afolabi was elevated to Associate Professor in Accountancy.

Commodore Olawunmi, who was born on May 25, 1963, hails from Imasayi, Ogun State.

He holds an impressive array of academic qualifications, beginning with a BSc in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, earned in 2003.

He furthered his studies at Schiller International University, Paris, where he obtained a BA in International Relations and Diplomacy in 2004 and an MA in the same field in 2006.

His academic journey culminated in a PhD in International Relations and Diplomacy from the Center for Diplomatic & Strategic Studies (CEDS), Paris, in 2013.

Additionally, he earned an MA in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan in 2014.

Olawunmi’s extensive professional background is complemented by his membership in numerous prestigious organisations.

These include the International Society of Military Law and the Laws of War, the National Institute of International Affairs, the National Institute of Management, the African Institute of Strategic Studies, and the Teachers’ Training Council.

He is also a Fellow of the National Defence College, Nigeria.

Chrisland University’s decision to appoint Commodore Olawunmi as Associate Professor underscores its commitment to enhancing the quality of education and academic leadership within the institution.

His distinguished career and academic prowess are expected to contribute significantly to the university’s mission of fostering excellence in higher education.

This development aligns with Chrisland University’s strategy to attract and retain top-tier talent, reinforcing its position as a leading institution in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
