Contractors Protest In Abuja  Over Unpaid Federal Projects

Dozens of aggrieved contractors on Monday stormed the premises of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja to protest non-payment for various government projects they claim to have executed since 2022.

The demonstrators, who blocked access to the Minister’s office, lamented that despite completing their contracts and obtaining certificates of completion, the federal government has failed to pay them.

Some of the contractors said they had borrowed heavily from banks to fund the projects and are now facing lawsuits and threats from creditors due to mounting debts.

One of the protesters, Mr. Kabir Yusuf, told reporters that while a few contractors had allegedly received payments “based on certain considerations,” the majority remained unpaid.

“We are here to demand payment for several contracts that we executed for the federal government.

“We were awarded the contracts, completed them, and got certificates of completion, yet we have not been paid since 2022 and 2023,” Yusuf said.

He noted that the situation has put many contractors under intense financial pressure, with some facing legal action from banks over unpaid loans running into millions of naira.

The contractors called on President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to urgently intervene and ensure the release of their payments.
