The Ogun State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sagamu has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Mobolaji, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road crash linked to former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to June 2, 2026.
Magistrate Olufunmilayo Somefun granted the adjournment following an application by the prosecution counsel, G.O. Ogunyomi, to enable the filing of a fresh charge in the matter.
The defence counsel did not oppose the request.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that this is the third time the case has been adjourned for the same reason.
Mobolaji is facing a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and reckless driving allegedly leading to death. He was also accused of negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm, and damage to property.
The prosecution further alleged that the defendant drove without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to provisions of the Federal Highway Act.
Speaking after the court session, defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, said the adjournment would allow for proper handling of the case and ensure justice for all parties.
The 46-year-old defendant was involved in the December 29, 2025 crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.
The accident occurred when the Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck. While Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, both victims died from the impact.
Joshua was subsequently treated and discharged after being certified medically fit.
The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami sparked widespread reactions within the global boxing community, where both men were regarded as key members of the boxer’s training team.
Their remains were later repatriated to the United Kingdom, where funeral rites were held in their honour.
The case is expected to resume on June 2 for further hearing.
