The Nigerian judiciary has assigned 48 justices across various divisions of the Federal High Court to handle cases brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a significant move aimed at expediting the trial of financial crimes .
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the decision, was made public in a statement dated February 13, 2025, and signed by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John T. Tsoho.
PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that the gesture seeks to fast-track the prosecution of financial crimes, money laundering, and corruption cases that have long plagued the country’s judicial system.
The press release outlined the judges designated to oversee the high-profile cases in several Federal High Court divisions. Notable among the assignments, Justices I. E. Ekwo, J. O. Abdulmalik, and J. K. Omotosho will handle EFCC cases in Abuja, while Lagos will see Justices C. J. Aneke, Y. S. Bogoro, and D. E. Osiagor preside over corruption trials.
In other regions, the court has made several strategic appointments to ensure thorough handling of cases. For example, Justices P. M. Ayua and A. T. Mohammed will oversee EFCC cases in Port Harcourt, and Justice I. L. Ojukwu has been assigned to the Calabar Division.
Furthermore, justices in other states such as Asaba, Warri, and Yenagoa have also been designated to preside over corruption cases, ensuring nationwide coverage.
Other key appointments include Justices M. S. Liman and H. J. Yilwa in Abuja, and Justices B. K. Usman in Yola, and J. K. Dagat in Maiduguri, ensuring that all corners of Nigeria are adequately represented in the fight against corruption.
The assignment of these 48 judges comes at a time when there has been widespread public outcry over delayed trials, prolonged adjournments, and allegations of judicial interference, particularly in cases involving politically exposed persons and corrupt government officials.
Justice Tsoho emphasized that this development reflects the judiciary’s commitment to delivering timely justice and combating corruption head-on, in line with the government’s broader anti-corruption agenda.
