In a decisive move, the Federal Government, via the Federal Ministry of Education, suspended the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from the Republic of Benin and Togo last Tuesday.
This decision was prompted by an undercover investigation conducted by a Nigerian newspaper, revealing the existence of a degree mill in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
The investigative reporter’s exposé detailed how a degree from Cotonou University was obtained within six weeks, along with participation in the National Youth Service Corps’ mandatory one-year scheme.
In response to this alarming revelation, the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria’s regulatory agency for universities, has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating fake universities within the country.
As part of these efforts, the NUC has disclosed a list of universities currently under investigation for awarding fake certificates.
Universities Under Investigation:
- National University of Nigeria, Keffi, Nasarawa State
- North Central University, Otukpo, Benue State
- Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, Enugu
- Richmond Open University, Arochukwu, Abia State
- West Coast University, Umuahia
- Saint Clements University, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State
- Volta University College, Aba, Abia State
- Illegal Satellite Campuses of Ambrose Alli University
- L.I.F.E Leadership University, Benin City, Edo State
The NUC, through a warning on its website, emphasizes that obtaining certificates from these institutions poses serious risks. Such certificates will not be recognized for NYSC, employment, or further studies. Law enforcement agencies have been duly informed to take necessary action.
Former Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, highlighted the persistence of illegal universities as a challenge to quality education in Nigeria in 2022.
The government remains resolute in its commitment to eliminating these institutions, with the NUC revealing the discovery of 58 illegal universities operating in the country thus far.
