A women’s group on Sunday, held a protest on the streets of Kano state, vehemently protesting the recent Court of Appeal decision that removed Abba Kabir Yusuf as the Governor of Kano State.
Expressing deep disappointment with the broader landscape of election-related court rulings, the protesters, undeterred by a police ban, brought attention to what they perceive as a controversial manipulation of the law in favor of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).
Brandishing placards and rallying behind chants in support of Governor Abba Yusuf, the women reached the state police command, submitting a letter outlining their grievances concerning the aftermath of the Court of Appeal’s judgment.
Hajiya Rabi Hotoro, one of the peaceful protesters, emphasized the importance of upholding democracy and the independence of the judiciary, urging relevant stakeholders to intervene and let the will of the Kano people prevail.
Despite a heavy security presence across Kano’s metropolis on Saturday, thwarting planned rallies by APC and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) supporters, the women’s group pressed forward with their demonstration.
The APC and NNPP had initially scheduled mega rallies and protests in response to the appellate court’s decision, with the APC’s Nasir Gawuna declared the winner.
However, both parties eventually abandoned their protests on Saturday, with no visible participants in the streets.
Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, the Director-General of the Gawuna/Garo Campaign Organisation, led APC stakeholders, including members of the Kano State House of Assembly, former commissioners, and ex-special advisers, in planning a mass rally.
Meanwhile, the NNPP’s state leadership, despite previous denials, faced some dissent among its supporters who remained steadfast in their plans for a protest.
The Kano Police Command had issued warnings against public processions, protests, and rallies, urging all parties to exercise restraint.
Security operatives were strategically stationed throughout the state, maintaining a vigilant presence in key locations and patrolling major streets.
