The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered an intensified security operation across forests, rural communities and major access routes in the state as part of efforts to curb criminal activities.
The police chief gave the directive on Tuesday during a strategic security meeting with Divisional Police Officers, patrol and guard officers, leaders of vigilante groups, forest guards and other recognised community-based security outfits in Asaba.
According to a statement issued by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other members of the Command’s management team.
Oyeniyi directed security personnel to strengthen intelligence gathering and sustain coordinated patrols across forests, roads, waterways, railway corridors and bush paths, describing intelligence-driven policing as critical to tackling insecurity in the state.
The commissioner commended vigilante groups and other local security outfits for supporting the police in safeguarding lives and property but insisted that all their operations must be carried out strictly within the confines of the law.
He ordered that the activities of the various security outfits at the grassroots be coordinated through the respective Divisional Police Officers to enhance community policing, improve information sharing and ensure effective operational control.
The CP also warned vigilante groups and other community security personnel against unlawful detention, torture, dehumanising treatment and the use of their positions to settle personal disputes.
He directed that all suspects arrested by the outfits must be immediately handed over to the nearest police station for proper investigation and prosecution.
Oyeniyi further charged the leaders of the security outfits to maintain discipline within their ranks by identifying and removing criminal or errant members, warning that the police would not tolerate any individual or group operating outside the law.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with legitimate security partners, noting that similar engagements would be extended to all local government areas of the state.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at improving coordination, enhancing intelligence sharing and reinforcing grassroots security architecture across Delta State.
