Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against what he described as overconfidence ahead of the 2027 presidential election, invoking the death of former military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, as a reminder that political calculations can be overturned by what he called the “God factor.”
Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, gave the warning in a post shared on his X handle on Wednesday, saying political endorsements alone do not guarantee the attainment of power.
The former lawmaker recalled that Abacha had secured the backing of the five registered political parties during the military era and appeared set to transform himself into a civilian president before his sudden death in 1998.
According to Melaye, Tinubu should recognise that human ambitions remain subject to divine authority.
“There is a God factor in the affairs of men. Tinubu does not understand this. Abacha was endorsed by all the five political parties at that time,” he wrote.
“There was no contest; he was already cruising to become a civilian president. God picked His phone and called Abacha.
“When God calls you, there is no network failure. That God has not gone on omugo. Tinubu, watch it.”
Melaye’s remarks come amid increasing political realignments and early campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties intensifying criticism of the Tinubu administration while the ruling All Progressives Congress continues consultations over its re-election strategy.
The Presidency had yet to respond to Melaye’s comments as of the time of filing this report.
