A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced a 20-year-old drug suspect, Muhammad Maharazu, to 15 years’ imprisonment for drug trafficking and attempting to attack operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency during his arrest.
The trial judge, Justice S.M. Shuaibu, handed down the verdict on Tuesday after the successful prosecution of the case by the NDLEA.
The court ordered that the sentence should take immediate effect from the date of judgment, with no option of fine.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the NDLEA Kano Command, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the convict was apprehended on February 14, 2026, at Filin Idi, an area identified by the agency as a notorious hub for illicit drug activities in the state.
Maigatari disclosed that Maharazu was found in possession of banned substances, including Diazepam tablets, at the time of his arrest.
He added that the suspect attempted to resist arrest violently by brandishing a long knife at operatives who were pursuing him.
“The suspect drew a knife in an attempt to attack officers and evade arrest, but he was swiftly disarmed through a coordinated effort by our operatives and taken into custody,” the statement read.
Following his arrest, Maharazu was charged to court, where he was subsequently convicted.
Reacting to the judgment, the Commander of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, DY Lawal, commended the court for what he described as a firm and deterrent ruling.
He said the judgment underscored the judiciary’s support for the agency’s mandate to combat drug-related crimes and protect its personnel.
Lawal stated, “This judgment sends a strong message that acts of violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated, and it reinforces our resolve to rid society of drug abuse and trafficking.”
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining its crackdown on drug-related offences across the state.
