The Department of State Security Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police have made a series of arrests connected to the forthcoming #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
Among those detained are a University of Ibadan (UI) student and a Kogi activist.
Ikhuemoisa Adeoluwa Igaga, a 100-level student from the Department of Computer Science at UI, was apprehended by the DSS after the institution’s security unit handed him over.
Igaga, who is the son of Comrade Mike Igaga, a former UI students’ union speaker, and cousin to the late NANS President Moses Oisakede, was reportedly arrested due to a bugged telephone conversation between him and his father.
The conversation allegedly involved discussions about a national protest against hunger, which took place during a recent electricity protest at UI.
According to sources, the DSS in Abuja intercepted the phone call and directed their Ibadan counterparts to detain Igaga.
The student was subsequently taken by the school’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) and handed over to the DSS.
He is currently writing a statement at the UI security unit and is expected to return to the DSS on Monday.
In a related incident, the Nigerian Police arrested Sardauna Walin Wasa, a resident of Suleja in Niger State, over a Facebook post supporting the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.
Wasa’s post, written in both English and Hausa, encouraged protests in Nigeria, which led to his swift detention.
He was transferred to Minna, the capital of Niger State, for further investigation.
The police have yet to disclose the specific charges Wasa faces or the legal implications of his actions.
These arrests are part of a broader crackdown by the DSS on activists and youths involved in mobilising for the nationwide protest.
Notably, youths in Kaduna and Sokoto states were also detained but later released, including a youth named Aliyu Sanusi and Engineer Khalid Aminu, both accused of organising and distributing protest materials.
