In a significant development concerning the recent cult-related violence in Sagamu, Ogun State, the Department of State Services (DSS) apprehended and later released the Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Hon. Afolabi Odulate, and Hon. Ademola Adeniran, the Ogun State House of Assembly member representing Sagamu 2 Constituency, popularly known as Sapele.
Both Odulate and Adeniran were subjected to rigorous questioning at the DSS’s Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta, as authorities suspected their involvement in the cult clashes that tragically claimed approximately 20 lives in Sagamu recently.
It’s worth noting that Hon. Damilare Bello, the legislator representing Sagamu 1 Constituency, had been previously detained by the DSS over similar allegations.
Despite Ogun State’s Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, asserting that the culprits in Sagamu were neither students nor affiliated with any political party, the DSS’s investigations have extended to include members of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Notably, Hon. Bello, detained approximately six days ago, remains in DSS custody, while Odulate and Sapele were released on Wednesday.
This series of events has led the PDP in Ogun State to accuse the DSS and other security agencies of being used as instruments for political witch-hunting by the APC and the government it leads.
Akinloye Bankole, the PDP spokesman in Ogun, asserted that the DSS’s decision to release Odulate and Adeniran, despite alleged connections to some of the cultists, raises questions about the transparency of the investigation into the Sagamu killings.
Bankole stated, “With the release of these APC top figures, it has become increasingly evident that there is a concerted effort to suppress information about the Sagamu killings, leaving innocent residents of Sagamu and Ogun State in a state of despair.”
