The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported two additional suspected cases of Ebola in the country, even as it confirmed that an earlier suspected case in Rivers State tested negative.
The development was disclosed on Sunday by the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, during a press briefing.
Idris said the two newly reported cases were still under investigation, stressing that their status had yet to be confirmed.
The latest disclosure comes amid heightened public attention to Ebola preparedness and the need for effective disease surveillance to prevent a potential outbreak.
According to the NCDC chief, the suspected case earlier reported in Rivers State had tested negative for the virus and had subsequently been cleared.
He assured Nigerians that the agency was closely monitoring the situation and would provide further updates as investigations into the two additional suspected cases progressed.
The NCDC did not disclose the locations of the two newly reported suspected cases, the identities of the individuals involved or whether they had any epidemiological links to one another.
As of Sunday, no confirmation had been provided that either of the two new suspected cases was positive for Ebola.
Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause serious illness and death. Transmission occurs through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is symptomatic, or through contaminated materials.
Health authorities routinely investigate suspected cases to establish whether they meet the criteria for confirmation and to determine whether further public health measures are necessary.
The NCDC’s ongoing investigations are expected to clarify the status of the two cases, while further official updates will be important in establishing the extent of any potential public health risk.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Nigerians should rely on verified information from the NCDC and other recognised public health authorities rather than unconfirmed reports circulating on social media.
The agency has urged vigilance through its assurance of continued monitoring, although the details released so far remain limited.
