The Edo State Government has deposed three traditional rulers in Etsako West and Etsako East Local Government Areas for allegedly violating traditional and legal succession guidelines.
A statement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Umar Ikhilor, in Benin, announced the removal of Umoru Inusa Umoru as the Aidenogie of South Ibie in Etsako West.
According to Ikhilor, Umoru’s removal followed the discovery that the Aidenogie stool was not vacant at the time of his purported appointment. Consequently, Alhaji Aliyu Kelvin Danesi has been reinstated as the legitimate holder of the position.
In a related development, the government also removed Lukman Akemokue as the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella in Etsako East, citing a breach of the established customary succession laws.
Ikhilor stated that Akemokue’s appointment failed to comply with the Bendel State Legal Notice 132 of 1979, which regulates traditional rulership succession in the region.
Similarly, Dr George Oshiapi Egabor was relieved of his duties as the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, Agenebode, also in Etsako East.
His removal, the government said, followed a suspension linked to a series of kidnappings and killings reported within his domain.
Ikhilor noted that the decisions were ratified by the Edo State Executive Council during its meeting held on Tuesday, April 29.
He assured that the state government is preparing to commence lawful selection processes for the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella and the Okumagbe of Uwano Kingdom, urging residents of the affected communities to maintain peace and uphold communal harmony.
“The government remains committed to preserving order, unity, and prosperity across the state,” the statement read.
