The Ogun State Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tunji Akoni, has called on Nigerian students to focus on building their skills in Information Technology (IT) rather than engaging in cyber crime, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo.”
Akoni made this appeal during the final edition of the Nigeria Computer Society Ogun State Chapter WIZKIDS Competition held at the African Church Grammar School in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday.
In his address, Akoni highlighted the vast opportunities available in the IT sector and stressed that cybercrime offers no sustainable future.
He urged students to embrace IT, stating that it plays a crucial role in almost every aspect of modern society.
“IT drives almost everything in the country,” he remarked, encouraging the youth to seek certifications in IT, which he described as more valuable than traditional academic certificates.
Sharing his personal experience, Akoni revealed how IT has opened numerous doors for both him and his daughter.
The event also featured notable contributions from other key figures in the tech community.
Durosimi Adekunle, President of the Ogun Tech Community, expressed concern over the underrepresentation of females in the tech industry.
He pointed out the lack of female UI/UX tech experts in Ogun State and encouraged female students to pursue careers in tech.
Prof. Rebecca Vincent, the state chairperson of the Nigeria Computer Society, echoed these sentiments, stressing the potential of computer skills to elevate students to greater heights.
The WIZKIDS Competition, sponsored by Yele Okeremi Young IT Company and EduTAMS IT Company, aims to promote IT skills among primary and secondary school students in Ogun State.
The competition saw three primary schools and three junior secondary schools awarded for their outstanding performances.
In the primary school category, Asepeiseoluwa of Foursquare School clinched the third position, Amoo Elisha of Purpose Vessels Nursery and Primary School secured the second position, and Akanji Araire of the Ambassador School Sango Otta emerged as the winner.
In the junior secondary school category, Louisville Girls High School, Ijebu Ode, took the first position, Foursquare International Secondary School came second, and the Ambassador College secured the third position.
The competition not only celebrated the winners but also aimed to inspire all participants to pursue excellence in IT, reinforcing the message that the future belongs to those who harness the power of technology.
