The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two suspects in Kano State over alleged possession of counterfeit foreign currency totaling $899,800.

The suspects, Abubakar Hussaini, 42, and Sahabi Adamu, 53, were apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) along Maiduguri Road, Wudil, Kano State, before being handed over to the EFCC for further investigation.

According to a statement released by the Kano Zonal Directorate of the anti-graft agency, the duo was traveling in a commercial Golf 3 Station Wagon en route to Kila village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State when they were intercepted.

A search of their vehicle led to the discovery of the fake dollars concealed inside a Maggi Star seasoning carton.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were on their way to meet a man identified as Muhammad Walo.

Walo was reportedly set to introduce them to one Mallam Mashiru, a self-styled spiritualist who allegedly claimed he could “transform” the counterfeit currency into genuine U.S. dollars through ritual prayers.

The EFCC stated that further investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.

Spokesperson for the Commission reiterated its commitment to clamping down on all forms of economic and financial crimes, warning members of the public to desist from engaging in fraudulent schemes.
