Sahara Power Group has launched a technical academy aimed at grooming the next generation of Nigerian engineers, in a move to address skills gaps and boost capacity in the country’s electricity sector.
The firm said its flagship Sahara Power Technical and Innovation Academy would train 50 graduate engineers through a 10-month intensive programme combining classroom learning with practical, on-the-job experience across major power generation facilities.
The initiative is being executed in partnership with Egbin Power Plc and First Independent Power Limited, both members of Sahara Power Group.
According to the company, participants will gain hands-on exposure to plant operations, maintenance systems and industry best practices, while also undergoing mandatory safety training designed to instil a safety-first culture in line with global standards.
It added that the trainees would participate in scenario-based safety modules to prepare them for real-life operational challenges within power plants.
Speaking on the initiative, the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, Kola Adesina, said the academy was a strategic response to the manpower needs of Nigeria’s power sector.
He said, “We are committed to powering Nigeria not just through infrastructure, but through people. This academy reflects our belief that sustainable energy delivery must be driven by skilled young professionals who understand the local operating environment.”
Adesina noted that the partnership with Egbin Power and First Independent Power Limited would provide trainees with access to high-performing generation assets, enabling them to acquire industry-relevant experience from the outset.
At the end of the programme, top-performing participants are expected to be absorbed into the group’s operations, while others will be released into the broader labour market to strengthen technical capacity across the sector.
He urged the trainees to embrace teamwork and develop problem-solving skills that would enable them to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the power industry and national development.
The company said the academy also aligns with its corporate social responsibility objectives, noting that the initiative would expand the pool of skilled engineers and support the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Sahara Power Group added that the programme underscores its commitment to delivering reliable energy through both infrastructure investment and human capital development.
