El-Rufai: Visit to Buhari Not Political, Adversaries Should Not Worry

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has dismissed speculations that his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari was politically motivated, stating that the visit was purely about unity and brotherhood.

On Friday, a high-profile delegation led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar visited Buhari at his residence in Kaduna. Alongside el-Rufai, other prominent political figures who accompanied Atiku included Aminu Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto; Isa Pantami, former Minister of Communications; Achike Udenwa, former Governor of Imo; Gabriel Suswam, former Governor of Benue; and Jibrilla Bindow, former Governor of Adamawa.

In a post shared on social media platform X, el-Rufai, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), reassured the public that the visit was not politically motivated.

He clarified that it was simply a gathering for “unity and brotherhood.”

“We joined other faithful for Jumaat prayers at the Yahaya Road Mosque and had a sumptuous lunch at the Buhari Residence,” el-Rufai wrote, adding that their adversaries need not be concerned.

“It is not about politics. It is about unity and brotherhood. And since we are all politically irrelevant, we just prayed and enjoyed lunch with our mentor,” he said.

El-Rufai’s defection from the APC had raised eyebrows, as he had consulted Buhari before making the decision to leave the ruling party.

El-Rufai had previously revealed that he sought Buhari’s counsel on his defection plans, and the former president had prayed for him after hearing of his intentions.

Despite el-Rufai’s departure from the APC, Buhari has remained steadfast in his commitment to the party.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Garba Shehu, Buhari reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC, stressing that he would never turn his back on the party that provided him with the platform to become Nigeria’s president.
