The Enugu State Government says it has created a register across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state for its unemployed citizens for possible recruitment in various areas.
The Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Mr Chika Ugwuoke disclosed this on Tuesday in Enugu in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Ugwuoke said that it had so far generated raw data of about 33,000 unemployed people made up of graduates, men, women and secondary school leavers through the creation of the register.
He said that his ministry was going to carry out sensitisation program to get more people to register.
“When we came in, Gov Peter Mbah had a lot of plans of interventions for the Youths, women and civil servants as human capacity development is a priority for him.
“Looking at the set up we had here before we came in, Gov. Peter Mbah told me that we needed to have a data base since we know there is unemployment.
“We know that some workers are retiring and aged, so we need to establish a labour market information management data base.
“It collects information across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, the information contains the details of people, who are unemployed or self employed and profiles them, so right now we have a data base.
“One of the things we did in the first three months in the office was to carry out an employability data collection across the 17 LGAs of the state,” he said.
Ugwuoke disclosed that theMbah administration cleared all the areas of the pensioners in the state following the recommendations of the committee that was set up to look into it.
He added that some of the key issues around pension and gratuity required verification to ensure that all the people were actually real, stating that the verification was ongoing.
“For the pensioners, the ones that had been cleared are the ones in the state but the local government verification is ongoing and that will precede the clearing of the local government pensioners.
On the new minimum wage for workers, the commissioner said the government was still awaiting the report of the committee set up by the government to look into it.
Ugwuoke said that Mbah’s administration had commissioned a fashion skill acquisition centre while other acquisition centres had been put in place under the Sustainable Development program of the governor’s administration.
He said that the aim of the centres was to build up the capacity of the people and to help in growing the economy of the state.
Ugwuoke explained that the state government had concluded arrangement with the Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO) to establish a skill development centre for the training of youths in the state.
He said that the training would be in both soft and hard skills as the Memorandum Of Understanding ( MOU) had been developed, adding that it was just waiting for the final approval.(NAN)
