In a bid to curb environmental infractions, the Lagos State Government has apprehended 30 environmental offenders, for their involvement in illegal waste disposal and blatant disregard for the state’s environmental regulations.

Confirmed in a press release on Saturday, signed by the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Folashade Kadiri, the offenders are slated for an appearance before a magistrate court next Monday.

According to the statement, this action is in continuation of the state’s zero tolerance policy, involving a combined team of LAWMA and the state Environmental Sanitation Corps.

Addressing the issue, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stressed the significance of apprehending and prosecuting those engaging in careless waste disposal.

He emphasized the shift from a previously lenient approach and reaffirmed the government’s steadfast dedication to upholding environmental order within the city.

Wahab further underscored the termination of covert waste disposal practices under the cover of darkness at unauthorized locations, cautioning that stringent legal measures would be taken against violators as a deterrent for others.

Encouraging responsible waste management practices, the Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, urged households to adopt responsible waste management practices, encouraging the segregation of recyclable and non-recyclable materials at their source and the use of designated waste bins endorsed by LAWMA.

He added that it would help reduce the menace of indiscriminate waste dumping, defacing the cityscape.
