A former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, is dead.
Uduaghan, who governed the oil-rich state between 2007 and 2015, died on Monday morning, October 19, 2026, at the age of 71, after a brief illness.
His death was announced by his family in a statement signed by Toju Andre Uduaghan on Monday.
The statement, titled ‘Announcement of the Passing of His Excellency, Dr Chief Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan’, described his death as a devastating loss to the family, the people of Delta State and Nigeria.
The family said, “It is with hearts weighed down by immeasurable grief and profound sorrow that we announce the passing to glory of our beloved Father, Brother, Uncle, and Patriarch, His Excellency, Dr Chief Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, former Governor of Delta State, who departed this world on the morning of 19th October 2026.”
Describing the late former governor as a respected family patriarch whose influence extended beyond his immediate relatives, the family said his death had left a painful void.
“His passing has left us devastated. Words can hardly express the depth of our sorrow at the loss of a man who meant so much to our family and whose life and service touched countless others across Delta State and Nigeria,” the statement added.
The family further described Uduaghan as a source of strength and a father figure whose contributions to public service would remain part of his legacy.
Uduaghan held several political positions in Delta State before emerging as governor in 2007.
According to the family, he served as the state’s Commissioner for Health between 1999 and 2003, before being appointed Secretary to the State Government, a position he held from 2003 to 2007.
He subsequently became governor in 2007 and remained in office until 2015, completing two consecutive terms.
The family said his years in government were marked by efforts towards the human and infrastructural development of Delta State.
Reflecting on his years of service, the statement described his death as a significant loss to the state and the country.
“His passing is a profound loss to our family, the people of Delta State, and Nigeria at large. We are grateful to Almighty God for his life, his service, and the legacy he leaves behind,” it said.
The family also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul, while extending condolences to relatives, friends, associates, former colleagues and others mourning his death.
“We pray that Almighty God, in His infinite mercy, will grant his soul eternal rest and comfort our family, friends, associates, former colleagues, and all who mourn this painful loss,” the statement added.
The family concluded its announcement with an emotional tribute to the deceased, expressing hope that his memory would endure through the lives he touched.
“Rest well, our beloved Father, Brother, and Uncle. Your memory will forever remain in our hearts, and your legacy will endure in the lives of those you touched.
“May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
