Retired Major General Adeniyi Oyebade, a former General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Division, has been appointed chairman of the Global Security Governing Council of District 9 Branded Residences.
The appointment is part of efforts by the hospitality firm to strengthen its security architecture, corporate governance and professional oversight as it develops its business.
The chairman of District 9 Branded Residences, Kunle Ilori-Diamond, announced the appointment in a statement he personally signed on Friday.
Ilori-Diamond said the decision underscored the company’s commitment to making security a central pillar of its operations, particularly within the hospitality industry, where the safety of guests, staff and facilities remains a critical concern.
He explained that structured governance and professional oversight had been integral to the management of his business interests in real estate, investment banking and construction.
According to him, his businesses operate through boards of directors and executive councils comprising experienced professionals and trusted mentors who provide strategic guidance and scrutinise major decisions.
“One thing you can’t take away from any of my businesses is structure.
“I don’t run my real estate business alone; I have a functioning board of directors who counsel, approve and decline certain of my decisions. I have an executive council for every one of my businesses,” he said.
The District 9 chairman said the same governance principle would guide the hospitality company, beginning with the establishment of its Global Security Governing Council.
“We are setting up a hospitality business, and we are starting with the Global Security Governing Council of District 9 Branded Residences. Security, when it comes to hospitality, is a serious business, and we need to pay keen attention to it,” Ilori-Diamond stated.
Oyebade brings decades of military leadership, operational experience and strategic security expertise to the position.
He previously served as the General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Division, headquartered in Kaduna, with responsibility for military operations across the North-West region.
He later served as Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, one of the country’s foremost military training institutions.
During his military career, Oyebade held command responsibilities involving internal security operations, anti-banditry campaigns and counter-insurgency efforts.
His tenure as GOC of 1 Division also coincided with the December 2015 confrontation between the Nigerian Army and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Earlier in his career, the retired general participated in multinational peacekeeping operations in West Africa, including deployments under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group during conflicts in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
District 9 Branded Residences said Oyebade’s appointment was expected to support the development of a robust security framework for its hospitality operations, drawing on his experience in military command, strategic planning and security management.
The company is seeking to establish a governance structure that places security considerations at the centre of its operational planning as it develops its hospitality business.
Beyond his professional qualifications, Ilori-Diamond described the appointment as a personal milestone, portraying the retired general as a mentor and father figure whose influence extends beyond business.
Expressing appreciation for Oyebade’s acceptance of the role, he said, “Above all, he is like a father to me.”
He added, “General Oyebade, thank you, Daddy mi, for accepting to chair the GSGAC of District 9. I am happy to make you proud, always!”
