The Ogun State Police Command recorded a total of 2,559 criminal cases across the state between January and March 2026, with theft and stealing emerging as the most prevalent offences, according to official crime statistics obtained from the command.
Data released by the Police Public Relations Department showed that 830 cases of theft and other stealing-related offences were reported within the period, placing the category at the top of the state’s crime chart for the first quarter of the year.
The figures further revealed a fluctuating crime pattern across the three months under review. January recorded the highest incidence with 922 cases, followed by March with 876 cases, while February posted the lowest figure at 761 cases.
Assault-related offences also featured prominently, with 532 cases documented between January and March. Related incidents of grievous harm and wounding accounted for 120 cases during the same period, underscoring persistent interpersonal violence across the state.
The report also indicated 269 cases of breach of public peace, alongside 262 other offences that were not specifically categorised by the command. Fraud-related crimes remained a concern, with 217 cases of false pretence and cheating recorded within the three-month period.
In more severe categories of crime, the command recorded 46 murder cases and seven attempted murder cases, while manslaughter stood at two cases.
Armed robbery incidents were put at 37, with kidnapping cases totalling eight across the state. The data showed that armed robbery peaked in February with 15 incidents.
Sexual and gender-based offences also featured in the report, with 13 rape cases recorded, alongside two cases of child stealing and five cases classified as unnatural offences.
Property-related crimes remained significant, as burglary accounted for 32 cases, while housebreaking recorded 56 incidents. Other related offences included 27 cases of store breaking, 22 cases of unlawful possession, and 17 cases of receiving stolen property. Defilement cases stood at 13.
The command further noted isolated incidents of human trafficking, cattle rustling, arson, cultism, vandalisation, and ritual-related killings within the period under review.
A breakdown of the statistics showed a sharp rise in assault cases in March, which recorded 214 incidents, while crime data were compiled from divisional police formations across the state and the State Criminal Investigation Department.
