In a shocking incident, a woman who pretended to be pregnant has been arrested for stealing a seven-day-old baby during a naming ceremony in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
The police apprehended the suspect, Khadija Aliyu, after she reportedly sneaked into a home during the event and abducted the newborn.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, disclosed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
He revealed that the suspect, Khadija Aliyu, attended the naming ceremony held behind the INEC office in Keffi, where she carried out the crime.
“On 28th September 2024, at about 6:30 p.m., police operatives attached to Keffi Division arrested Khadija Aliyu for stealing a seven-day-old baby girl during a naming ceremony,” Nansel stated.
“The suspect, who had been claiming to be pregnant, sneaked into the house where the baby was laid to sleep, carried the child on her back, covered her with a veil, and escaped.”
However, Aliyu’s plan was foiled by vigilant police operatives, who arrested her shortly after the abduction.
The child has since been reunited with her family.
In a separate development, the police also arrested an ex-convict for stealing motorcycles in the Keffi area. DSP Nansel said the suspect, identified as Hussaini Mohammed, was arrested by operatives attached to the Angwan Lambu Division for stealing three motorcycles.
Mohammed, a resident of the area behind the Keffi stadium, had recently been released from a correctional facility.
“During the investigation, three motorcycles suspected to be stolen were recovered from the suspect as exhibits,” Nansel said.
The Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Nadada, urged the public to visit the Angwan Lambu Division with proof of ownership to reclaim any stolen motorcycles.
He said both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
