In a significant development, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works, has earmarked a substantial N431 billion for contractors engaged in road dualisation projects.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a meeting with contractors and ministry officials in Abuja.
Minister Umahi also emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritize dualised roads across the nation.
He highlighted the crucial role of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in funding 50% of the contract sum, ensuring financial support until 2025.
However, Minister Umahi stressed the importance of transparency, urging contractors to promptly file claims and seek clarification on augmentation from Regional Directors before certificate signing.
He emphasized the accountability that comes with signing certificates and urged contractors to deliver quality work that withstands overloading.
In a bid to enhance project longevity, Umahi introduced a Performance Bond for new projects, guaranteeing their durability for a decade. Contractors with roads failing to meet this criterion were encouraged to contact the Ministry for corrective measures.
Furthermore, Minister Umahi urged contractors to embrace concrete technology, drawing inspiration from international models like India and Singapore.
Aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Minister emphasized the government’s vast road infrastructure portfolio, encompassing 18,000 kilometers and a contract sum of approximately N14.1 trillion.
He acknowledged payment challenges and cautioned against exorbitant price hikes by contractors, pledging to revisit project concepts for fairness and alignment with engineering standards.
In closing, Umahi emphasized President Buhari’s keen understanding of road infrastructure and the necessity for transparency in contract cost escalation. He stressed the need for contractors to provide detailed justifications for any significant price adjustments, emphasizing accountability to the Nigerian society.
This development signifies a substantial investment in Nigeria’s road infrastructure, aiming to improve transportation networks across the nation while ensuring transparency and quality in government contracts.
