The Federal Government, acting through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has given the green light to a staggering 340% surge in electricity tariffs for customers falling under the Band A classification.
This decision was officially announced by NERC’s Vice Chairman, Musliu Oseni, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Under the approved adjustment, Band A customers, who currently pay N66 per kilowatt-hour, will now be required to pay N225 per kilowatt-hour.
Band A customers are distinguished by their access to a generous 20 hours of electricity supply daily, making up 15% of the 12 million electricity customers across Nigeria.
However, Oseni revealed that some customers previously classified under Band A have been downgraded to Band B due to their failure to meet the required hours of electricity provision by the distribution companies.
In additionally, NERC plans to reduce the number of feeders categorized as Band A from 800 to under 500, representing a shift where 17% of feeders now qualify as Band A, despite servicing only 15% of the total connected electricity customers.
Despite the tariff adjustment for Band A customers, Oseni emphasized that customers falling under other bands would remain unaffected by the review. The commission’s April supplementary order also permits a supply of 235 kilowatt-hours per hour.
