The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that the recently detected XEC COVID-19 variant, identified in Australia and 28 other countries, has not been reported in the country.
This clarification followed the circulation of a leaked letter from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, which raised concerns about the possible presence of the variant in Nigeria.
The ministry explained that the letter, dated December 5, 2024, was precautionary and aimed at enhancing the nation’s preparedness amid increased global travel during the festive season.
Speaking on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Kachollum Daju, emphasized that the communication was not intended to incite panic but to guide medical practitioners in safeguarding public health.
“The XEC COVID-19 variant has been detected in 29 countries. While it has not been reported in Nigeria, the festive season necessitates heightened vigilance as travelers arrive from various parts of the world,” Daju stated.
The letter, signed by Dr. O.N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, directed hospitals nationwide to activate heightened alert systems and maintain a high index of suspicion for patients exhibiting COVID-like symptoms.
It also called for enhanced data sharing and collaboration with stakeholders to monitor the variant effectively.
“I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health,” the letter read in part.
The directive urged health facilities to implement timely information-sharing protocols and monitoring mechanisms to prevent the importation and spread of the variant into Nigeria.
The ministry also reiterated the importance of preventive measures, particularly during the holiday season, to mitigate any potential risks posed by the global movement of people.
As the government works to safeguard public health, Nigerians are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and cooperate with authorities to prevent any resurgence of the virus.
