The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion, urging citizens to reflect on the values of compassion, humility, service and peaceful coexistence associated with the life and teachings of the Prophet.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the annual celebration provides an opportunity for Nigerians to draw lessons from the Prophet’s life and apply them to the challenges confronting the country.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.
The minister urged Nigerians to use the holiday to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that building a peaceful and united country remained a collective responsibility.
He also called on Muslims and other Nigerians celebrating the occasion to do so with restraint, mutual respect and consideration for others.
Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property and sustaining peace across the country.
He wished the Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
The public holiday will provide Muslims across the country an opportunity to participate in activities marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad while reflecting on his teachings and legacy.
