The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the public holidays underscore the government’s recognition of the spiritual importance of the festival to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and across the world.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful on the occasion, describing Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid-ul-Adha, as a period of deep spiritual reflection anchored on sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity.
He urged Nigerians to utilise the holiday period to pray for the peace, unity, and prosperity of the country.
“The Federal Government calls on all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, seeking divine guidance as the nation continues its pursuit of peace, security and shared prosperity,” the statement read.
The minister also appealed to citizens to embrace unity, brotherhood, and peaceful coexistence during and beyond the festive period.
The government further wished Muslims across the country a peaceful and joyous celebration.
