FG Threatens Legal Action Against Daily Trust Over LGBTQ Report

The Federal Government has announced plans to take legal action against Daily Trust newspaper following an alleged  contentious article published on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the  article claimed that the government had entered into a $150 billion Samoa Deal, which allegedly required loan recipients to enforce LGBTQ rights within their jurisdictions.

But, in a swift response, the Federal Government categorically denied the allegations, clarifying that the Samoa agreement is focused solely on enhancing the nation’s economic development and does not contain any provisions related to same-sex marriage or LGBTQ rights.

Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, stated that there is no mention of same-sex marriage in the signed document, dismissing the claims made by the newspaper as baseless.

During a press briefing on Saturday, Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding freedom of speech while condemning what it described as misinformation and fake news propagated by Daily Trust.

He stated that the government intends to pursue legal action to address the false report.

“While respecting the freedom of speech and expression of all citizens and the fourth estate, the FG will make an official report against Daily Trust to the Newspapers Proprietors of Nigeria and use the court to seek redress against the misinformation and fake news of Daily Trust,” Minister Idris asserted.
