The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, of shutting down the state’s judiciary during his tenure, allegedly forcing a pregnant woman to give birth while in prison.
Wike made the allegation on Wednesday during his monthly media interaction with journalists in Abuja while criticising the Nigerian Bar Association for providing a platform for Amaechi to speak at its recently concluded annual conference in Port Harcourt.
Amaechi, who governed Rivers State between 2007 and 2015, is currently the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate.
The FCT minister alleged that the former governor’s decision to shut down the courts had serious consequences for people in detention, including a pregnant woman who, according to him, gave birth in prison.
“Rotimi Amaechi, who wants to be vice president today, once shut down the court in Rivers State and made a pregnant woman to give birth in the prison,” Wike said.
He questioned the decision of the NBA to invite Amaechi to address its conference, arguing that such a platform should not be extended to a politician over actions he described as detrimental to the administration of justice.
Wike said the NBA would likely have reacted differently if he, as FCT minister, ordered the closure of courts in the nation’s capital.
He argued that the consequences of such an action should be considered before granting political figures platforms to justify their past decisions.
The minister’s comments come amid renewed political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Amaechi emerging as one of the leading figures in the ADC coalition seeking to challenge the ruling political establishment.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a former political ally of Amaechi, has remained an outspoken critic of the former governor and other members of the emerging opposition coalition.
However, Wike did not provide further details during the interaction on the identity of the woman, the circumstances surrounding her detention or the specific period when the alleged birth occurred.
