In a landmark step to strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy, the Federal Government has designated Egbin Power Plc as the host location for the country’s first National Data Park and Compute Infrastructure.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, disclosed this during a recent visit to the power plant, located in Lagos.
He was received by the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, Dr. Kola Adesina (MFR), and the CEO of Egbin Power, Mr. Mokhtar Bounour, among other executives.
Dr. Tijani said the decision to site the national digital infrastructure at Egbin Power was driven by the plant’s reliable power supply, expansive land space, access to water, and a capable management team—all essential ingredients for a successful digital economy hub.
“Without a digital economy, the growth we seek cannot be realized. Everything we need to truly power the digital economy exists here in Egbin Power—not only in terms of energy and water, but also in the excellence of the team that runs this facility,” the minister said.
He added that the development would support the nation’s competitiveness in artificial intelligence and data-driven innovation, especially at a time when global economies are rapidly embracing AI technology.
“Nigeria’s digital economy is a significant contributor to our GDP. An efficient data centre is crucial for us to harness AI capabilities and optimize data processing,” Tijani added.
The proposed National Data Park is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to use technology and innovation as levers for economic growth.
The collaboration with Egbin Power—one of the largest power generation companies in sub-Saharan Africa—marks a strategic convergence of energy and digital infrastructure development.
Speaking on the partnership, Dr. Adesina noted, “There is a nexus between the digital economy and power. Reliable power enhances the functionality of the digital economy, whether in terms of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), data utilization, and more.”
He emphasized Egbin’s readiness to support the initiative with available land and stable electricity, noting that the company had made significant investments to revamp the facility since its takeover.
According to him, plans are also underway to expand the plant’s capacity.
Egbin Power CEO, Mr. Bounour, reiterated the company’s commitment to powering national growth through strategic partnerships.
“We are open to collaborations that will drive Nigeria’s growth and success. We will continue to push boundaries to deliver reliable power to the nation,” he said.
During the visit, Dr. Tijani also toured the Bright Gyimah Innovation Centre within Powerfields Schools, a facility owned by Egbin Power.
The centre provides young Nigerians with access to training in IT, artificial intelligence, and creative fields such as music, arts, and hospitality.
