The Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Professor Oluwole Banjo, has described the Federal Government’s takeover of the institution as a transformative step that will open up new opportunities for the university, staff, and other stakeholders.

The Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dapo Oke, state this in a statement issued and made available to PLATFORM TIMES on Monday.

Oke said the transition, which takes effect from Friday, March 7, 2025, was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of a strategic commitment to enhancing teacher education and strengthening Nigeria’s higher education sector.

The Registrar said the statement from the State Houses shows that the move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision of improving educational quality at all levels.

According to Oke, the take over also serves as a tribute to notable figures in education and national development, including Chief Obafemi Awolowo, human rights activist and educator Dr. Tai Solarin—after whom the university is named—and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The statement read “With the transition, TASUED will now benefit from increased funding, improved facilities, and access to federal programmes designed to support research, innovation, and teacher training.

“This historic adoption of the Premier University of Education, TASUED on its 20th Anniversary, is an exciting opportunity in leveraging the resources and support of the Federal Government to elevate the standard of education and research at TASUED and a further commitment to strengthening teacher education across the country.”

The statement explained that the Vice Chancellor, speaking on behalf of the university’s management and council, expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for granting TASUED federal status, describing the move as a “welcome development.”

“The university is eternally grateful to its founding fathers and all stakeholders who laid an indelible legacy to ensure the survival of this institution and its transition into a federal university,” he said.

He also commended Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his role in facilitating the transition, calling it “the best thing that could happen to Nigeria’s premier university of education under his leadership.”

The Vice-Chancellor further extended appreciation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, under whose tenure the university was established.

He also acknowledged the contributions of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Adetona, in achieving this milestone for the Ijebu people and Ogun State.

Reassuring staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders, Professor Banjo stated that the transition would not disrupt academic activities or operations at the university.

“TASUED remains committed to its mission of producing top-tier educators and researchers. This takeover provides a unique opportunity to elevate the university’s academic standing and global competitiveness,” he said.

The university management pledged to provide further updates as more details on the transition emerge.
