Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who had been on the run over allegations of corruption, has finally honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The embattled politician is facing accusations of money laundering and financial misconduct amounting to N80.2 billion.
Bello’s appearance at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday marks a turning point in the months-long standoff between the former governor and the anti-graft agency.
He had previously been declared wanted for evading arrest and failing to comply with the commission’s repeated invitations regarding the alleged embezzlement of state funds during his tenure.
In a statement released by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, the former governor confirmed that his decision to submit himself to the EFCC followed extensive consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.
According to Bello, his earlier defiance was not an attempt to undermine the law, but rather an effort to enforce his fundamental human rights and ensure due process was followed.
“The case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing,” the statement read.
“It is important for the former Governor to now honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”
Bello further reiterated his commitment to the rule of law and expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s anti-corruption drive.
He pointed out that during his time as governor, he had introduced anti-corruption measures in Kogi State, aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
The former governor arrived at the EFCC office in the company of several prominent figures.
While details of his engagement with EFCC operatives have not been fully disclosed, Bello’s media office called on the commission to act with professionalism and respect his fundamental rights as a Nigerian citizen.
