The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, has alleged that foreign interests are fueling Nigeria’s protracted insecurity, claiming that cross-border terrorists and some external actors have continued to frustrate efforts to restore peace across the country.
Bwala made the assertion on Sunday during an interview on The Link Up Podcast hosted by Echoo Room, where he argued that the security crisis confronting Nigeria extends beyond domestic factors.
According to him, terrorist groups operating in the Sahel region frequently infiltrate Nigeria through its porous borders, launch attacks on communities and retreat to neighbouring countries, making military operations more difficult.
He further claimed that foreign nationals had been identified among Boko Haram suspects apprehended by the Nigerian military, although he declined to reveal their nationalities, citing security concerns.
Bwala said the discovery underscored the transnational dimension of terrorism and reinforced concerns that external forces were contributing to the country’s security challenges.
The presidential aide also questioned the activities of some non-governmental organisations operating in insurgency-ravaged areas, suggesting that their long-term operational plans raised concerns.
He said, “Many years ago, when Boko Haram started in Borno State, NGOs came for humanitarian work and rented houses for 10 to 15 years. How did they know they would need to stay that long?”
Although Bwala did not name any organisation or provide evidence to support the claim, he maintained that the Federal Government must remain vigilant against both internal and external factors sustaining insecurity.
He stressed the need for stronger regional cooperation, enhanced intelligence sharing and coordinated security operations to combat terrorism and other violent crimes across Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.
