Christopher Awole, a former police officer, shocked many when he revealed that he left behind his hard-earned master’s degree certificates in Journalism to join the Nigeria Police Force. In a candid interview, Awole shared his remarkable journey.
Awole’s educational path led him through prestigious institutions like the Nigeria Institute of Journalism, Times Journalism Institute, and the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Master’s degree.
However, his life took an unexpected turn when he joined the Nigeria Police Force on February 1, 1983.
He candidly explained that his decision to join the police was born out of necessity.
In the 1980s, he and his uncle faced harassment from government workers while selling items by the roadside in Lagos.
Frustrated and seeing no hope, Awole decided to explore a different path when he learned that the police were recruiting.
Despite being advised to consider his certificates, he followed his heart and joined the force.
Awole’s parents were initially against his choice, believing that the police profession lacked honor and integrity.
However, their disapproval only fueled his determination to become an upright and honorable police officer.
Throughout his 35-year career, Awole remained committed to his promise to his parents.
He never accepted bribes or obstructed justice for personal gain. Instead, he received gifts for performing his duties with integrity.
Even in retirement, he continues to receive tokens of appreciation for his exemplary service.
Awole initially viewed his police service as a stepping stone to other career opportunities.
However, he found fulfillment within the force and decided to serve for the full 35 years.
Despite not achieving financial wealth during his service, he retired with his body fully intact, a rarity for officers who start as rank and file.
Christopher Awole’s journey from journalism to the police force is a testament to his commitment to public service and his unwavering dedication to uphold the principles of honor and integrity throughout his career.
