Amid escalating poverty, food insecurity, and frequent power outages, former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has called on Nigerians to take to the streets in protest against what he describes as “poor governance and misplaced priorities” by the administration.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Dalung expressed frustration over the country’s deteriorating living conditions, urging citizens to “speak the language the government understands” rather than endure worsening hardships in silence.
“The northern states are especially hard-hit, with blackouts compounding issues of hunger, poverty, and misery that have taken citizens hostage,” Dalung wrote.
“Meanwhile, government officials enjoy lavish lifestyles, with new taxes burdening the common man, all while citizens are called upon to ‘sacrifice’ for a so-called ‘renewed hope’ that seems increasingly hollow.”
Dalung questioned the silence of public figures and activists, tagging well-known voices like Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, lawyer Femi Falana, activist Aisha Yesufu, and several others who have previously spoken out on national issues.
“Have Nigerians been abandoned by voices of conscience?” he asked, naming individuals he believes should join in amplifying the call for change.
Criticizing the government’s direction, Dalung warned that “the country is dangerously heading into an abyss” and urged citizens to rise above fear and act. “We must return to the street and speak the languages they understand. What are we scared of—death or jail?”
This call comes at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with mounting economic challenges, including skyrocketing food prices, inconsistent power supply, and a rising cost of living. Dalung’s statements have reignited conversations about the need for accountability, with some citizens echoing his concerns on social media.
