A tragic incident struck Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State as four siblings were confirmed dead following a suspected case of food poisoning, with their mother currently battling for her life in critical condition at a local hospital.

The unfortunate event occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 6, 2025, and was confirmed by the Anambra State Police Command on Wednesday.

Spokesperson of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, said officers from the Ogidi Police Division responded swiftly to a distress call from the victims’ residence.

Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless bodies of the children, which were promptly evacuated to a morgue for preservation and autopsy.

According to Ikenga, preliminary investigations revealed that the family members had consumed a meal suspected to be contaminated.

Samples of the food have since been collected and sent for forensic analysis to ascertain the exact cause of death.

“Their mother, who also partook in the meal, is currently receiving intensive medical attention,” Ikenga said. “Her survival and subsequent account will be crucial to the ongoing investigation.”

He further disclosed that detectives were engaging residents and other possible witnesses in the area to piece together more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed profound sorrow over the development and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

“This is a deeply saddening event, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” the CP said. “We are committed to ensuring that no stone is left unturned as we seek to understand and address the root cause of this tragedy.”

The police assured members of the public that thorough investigations would be carried out, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the deceased children and their mother had not been made public.
