The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced its intention to revoke the driver’s licences of unruly drivers as part of its efforts to reduce road crashes in Nigeria.
The move was disclosed by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, in Abuja while reviewing the outcomes of the 2024 Eid-el-Kabir Special Patrol Operations, which took place from Friday, June 14, to Sunday, June 16.
In his statement, Mohammed stressed the critical importance of collective participation and collaboration among all stakeholders in addressing the issue of road safety.
“We have realized more than ever before the increasing need for collective participation and collaboration of all stakeholders,” he said.
He said during the special patrol operations, the FRSC focused on delivering a reduction in road crashes and fatalities by strictly enforcing traffic laws and engaging in widespread public education campaigns.
Mohammed highlighted the Corps’ dedication to this cause, stating, “We took full advantage of the opportunity to deliver a reduction in road crashes and fatalities in our country by enforcing laws and educating commuters on safety consciousness.”
The Corps Marshal further noted the responsibility that rests on the FRSC to manage road safety challenges effectively.
He remarked, “We did this because we are aware that if we fail on our part, posterity will not pardon our failure to manage the challenges, and the scars of our irresponsibility will be deafening.
Hence, the imperatives of doubling our efforts in our future engagements.”
One of the key strategies employed by the FRSC during the review exercise was the strengthening of the ongoing Inter-agency Joint Task Force (JTF).
This task force, which includes various law enforcement and traffic management agencies, was particularly focused on mitigating the excesses of trailer drivers, who are often involved in serious road incidents.
