In response to recent Supreme Court rulings affecting the local government administration in Rivers State, Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has issued directives for immediate action.

Following the outlawing of caretaker arrangements in the local government system, Governor Fubara mandated the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume control of the 23 local government areas.

This interim measure is pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

In a statewide broadcast from Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara underscored the necessity of adhering to judicial directives, despite his administration’s disagreement with the court’s judgments.

He emphasized his government’s commitment to upholding constitutional governance and the rule of law, noting that legal consultations are underway to analyze the full implications of the court rulings.

Governor Fubara further instructed outgoing local government council chairmen to facilitate a seamless transition by formally handing over administrative responsibilities to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025.

He assured citizens of the state that his administration remains dedicated to maintaining peace and ensuring the continuity of good governance amidst these legal developments.

“While acknowledging the challenging times imposed by recent court pronouncements, I urge the people of Rivers State to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities,” Governor Fubara stated.

He pledged to implement the court’s decisions diligently upon receiving certified copies of the judgments, aiming to uphold the interests of the state and its citizens.
