The Taraba state governor, Agbu Kefas, on Wednesday, ordered the immediate implementation of a fifty percent reduction in student fees at the state university.
The governor said this in a statement by his Spokesperson, Emmanuel Bello, at the Taraba State University where he said quality education remained his main priority.
He further said that, the decision comes in response to the recent increase in fuel subsidy and aims to alleviate the financial burden on students.
Governor Kefas who emphasized his commitment to providing quality education during a visit to Taraba State University, assessed the institution’s condition.
During the visit, the governor discovered several issues, including 53 courses lacking accreditation, increased school fees, and inadequate student hostels.
The governor however demanded a report on why some graduates from the university are not participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or attending law school when he met with the management of the institution.
To address these concerns, the governor ordered 50% of the school fee should be deducted.
The news of the fee reduction brought joy to many university students, who believe it will significantly improve their lives.
According to the governor’s spokesperson, “Some parents said the hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy has made payments of school fees difficult. They said the slash has raised their hopes.”
Meanwhile, Kefas said plans are being perfected to pay pensioners and retirees, and he had also directed prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements.
