In a spirited move to boost morale and performance, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has promised a cash reward of N2.5 million for each gold medal won by the state’s athletes at the forthcoming National Sports Festival, which kicks off on Sunday.

The governor, who made the announcement during a visit to the athletes’ camp at Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area, also pledged N1.5 million for silver medalists and N1 million for those who win bronze.

Additionally, each Ogun athlete participating in the festival is to receive N50,000 within 24 hours, the governor assured.

“I understand that when you win a medal, there is an instant award. Once you get a medal, you get a reward — a huge one,” Abiodun told the athletes.

“You are here because you are the best from Ogun State. Anyone who is not here is not good enough to represent the state. You are not just here to compete; you are here to win. We are hosting to win, and you must bring the medals home.”

He praised the athletes for their dedication and discipline, stating that Ogun State has always been a breeding ground for world-class sportsmen and women who have brought honour to the country.

Abiodun also highlighted the state’s investment in infrastructure and sports development, noting that this year’s edition marks the first time all athletes are camped together ahead of the festival.

“The National Sports Festival was designed to foster unity among Nigerians. By the time you leave here, you will have bonded and built friendships across different parts of the country,” he said.

He further disclosed that the newly renovated International Sports Arena in Abeokuta, which will host several events during the festival, is now positioned to attract international competitions, forming a key part of the state’s growing sports economy.

While acknowledging some minor logistical challenges at the camp, Abiodun promised prompt interventions to ensure a smooth experience for athletes and officials alike.
