A former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Hazeem Gbolarumi, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections, after a landslide victory in the party’s primary election held across the 33 local government areas of the state.
Gbolarumi polled a total of 3,615 votes to defeat his sole challenger, Barrister Beulah Adeoye, who scored 22 votes in the exercise conducted on Sunday and supervised by party officials and security agencies.
The Chairman of the PDP gubernatorial primary election in the state, Mr. Tolulope Awoniyi, announced the result on Sunday evening at the collation centre held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to Awoniyi, 3,694 party members were registered for the exercise, while 3,640 were accredited to vote across the state.
He declared Gbolarumi winner after confirming that the former deputy governor secured an overwhelming majority of valid votes cast.
“Having satisfied the requirements and scored the highest number of votes, I hereby declare Barrister Hazeem Gbolarumi as the winner of the election,” Awoniyi said.
The exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by the Head of Department of Election and Party Monitoring in Oyo State, Engineer Olugbenga Keshinro, alongside party stakeholders and security operatives.
Gbolarumi’s emergence signals the start of early political realignments within the PDP in Oyo State as parties begin positioning for the 2027 general elections, with the former deputy governor expected to lead the party’s campaign in the coming months.
