Kogi State, Nigeria – In a surprising turn of events, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has vehemently denied the reported assassination attempt on his life.
This denial came shortly after his Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, issued a statement claiming that gunmen in military uniforms had waylaid the governor’s convoy and opened fire.
Fanwo’s statement, released on Sunday, described how assailants dressed in military attire targeted Governor Bello’s convoy while he was en route from Lokoja to Abuja for official engagements.
The alleged attack occurred at three different points on the Lokoja-Abuja highway, with the last incident near Kwali Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) around 4:20 pm on Sunday.
According to the Commissioner, Governor Bello’s security personnel swiftly intervened to thwart the assailants’ actions, describing their actions as “satanic plans of the unknown soldiers.”
However, Governor Bello, who arrived in Abuja a few hours after the reported attacks, refuted these claims during a press conference at his Abuja residence.
He firmly stated that there was no assassination attempt on his life and asserted the security of the route between Kogi State and FCT.
He addressed the incident on the road as a “misunderstanding” between his security escorts and another unnamed sister agency at a checkpoint. Governor Bello claimed to have personally intervened, and the issue was resolved amicably.
Bello emphasized his respect for the various law enforcement agencies and urged a thorough investigation into the incident to hold any wrongdoers accountable.
He stressed the need for professionalism and discipline within these agencies and assured Nigerians that the misunderstanding had been resolved.
The governor’s comments, while conflicting with his Information Commissioner’s earlier statement, shed light on the situation, raising questions about the initial reports and the circumstances surrounding the altercation between security personnel on the road.
