Gunmen have tragically assassinated a bread seller, Mr Sampson Owobo, who is said to be a retired police officer and his wife, Mrs. Owobo in imo state.

The couple, originally hails  from Edo State, fell victim to this heinous crime in Owerri, the state capital.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident was unfolded on a Sunday night around 8 pm, outside the Chisco Transport office near the Owerri Area Police Command Office.

However, residents hurried inside to shut doors leading to their flats, while business owners sought refuge.

According to an eyewitness, the three assailants, attempted to rob the couple of a bag believed to contain a significant sum of money.

The eyewitness explained that a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was shot at  a close range in the forehead after the three-man gang failed to take the bag of cash while his wife sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound near her chest.

It was disclosed that the couple had been running a bread-selling business and operated a Point of Sale (POS) service.

Tragically, despite immediate efforts to save her, Mrs. Owobo was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri while her husband died at the scene of the incident.

“His wife was also shot at a close range, at her left side, near her chest.

“While the wife was taken by cops to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where she was later confirmed dead, the husband passed away right there.

“The armed thieves were attempting to snatch a bag containing cash while brandishing pump action rifles.

The couple sells bread, and operates a POS business,” the source disclosed.

The spokesperson for the State’s police command, Henry Okoye, expressed strong condemnation of this brutal act.

The Commissioner of Police has initiated a swift investigation with the aim of apprehending the perpetrators.
